I am a housewife and i am not Bored
I am a housewife and i am not bored. I know, this sounds like the cliched lines from a famous Bollywood movie, where the hero keeps reiterating his name and that he is not a terrorist. I can totally empathize with how he must have felt, about people being judgmental.
When people ask me what i do and i say, that i am housewife, the assumption is that i must be bored. I have been a housewife for almost past two decades now. It is a 'job' i've taken on whole-heartedly, out of choice, not because i lack the degrees or the requisite intelligence for a 'regular job'. Perhaps that is another reason for this assumption, that if i have the qualifications and the intelligence why am i not 'working'. Why am i wasting my time?
I am sure, this question was never posed to my mother or grandmother...and i think in my grandmother's time, such a question would be even seen as a sacrilege. Anyway, coming to the point on hand...are housewives bored? Infact, the politically correct word for the day would be a 'homemaker' as if the word 'housewife' itself was derogatory.
It is not that i don't myself feel a bit down or go through introspective 'silent monologues' about my 'non-job' status, but i am content where i am (on most days). Ofcourse, on the days, that i've had a tiff with the spouse or the daughter, the whole idea of being 'just a housewife' sounds ominously stifling to me!!
Isn't everybody bored at some point or the other however exciting their life may seem to the others? Infact, ask any housewife or homemaker how she spends her time, and she may give you a look that could wilt you. There's enough to keep her busy, if she so wants and desires.
I had read somewhere that if husbands actually start paying the housewives for all that they do, most husbands would never be able to afford one!! Well, when so many of us intelligent and 'qualified' women choose to be housewives, i think the least people in and outside the house can do, is show some respect for the 'job'.
In that hope, i rest my case!
